Mais explorant l'historicité des sociétés passées, l'historien se doit de prendre également en compte l'historicité de son époque - par exemple, aujourd'hui, le culte de la mémoire et celui des victimes -, ce qui le conduit désormais à une interrogation épistémologique et historiographique beaucoup plus ambitieuse que précédemment. Cette conscience nouvelle rompt enfin avec l'idée naïve que l'historien ne serait d'aucun lieu, d'aucun temps sinon l'incarnation de la vérité de l'événement qui s'exprimerait par son truchement. Autant d'enjeux qui traversent la discipline et ne se comprennent que dans les allers-retours entre le passé et le présent qui nourrissent ce dictionnaire.
